Farming in NYS

State animal agriculture industries are in a time of unprecedented change, and nowhere is that more true than in the state of New York. Today’s contemporary farms have expanded production capacities and are larger and more specialized than farms 20 years ago.  With these changes, and the rise of food safety scares and increasing social awareness, consumers are increasingly interested in how their food is produced. Fewer people know a farmer. They’ve lost the human connection to how our food and fiber is grown, which troubles them and impacts their trust. This lack of understanding has created opportunity for social change organizations and detractors to fill the information void with misunderstanding and misinformation.  The impact of these and other changes on New York farmers and the New York Animal Agriculture Coalition (NYAAC) are significant. New York farmers care deeply and have a moral and ethical obligation to care for their land, their animals and their families. The disconnect with consumers, however, can increase the cost and threaten the viability and longevity of farm operations. Across the country a number of cases drive home the reality of how much farms depend on the support of their community. The permitting process for farm expansion, the ability to follow common best management practices, and public nuisance suits, can all drive farms out of business or prevent farm expansions.

Family Farming

NY Farmers Love Family Tradition

99 percent of NY farms are family owned

As farmers we believe in farm life, in our community and in providing you with nutritious food. We believe in improving the land and making it more productive, in protecting the soil, and in providing excellent care for our animals. We are committed to continuous environmental improvement. We know this commitment is required to sustain our dream, and our way of life. Every day we farm, we strive to gain a better understanding of our entire production process, because the healthiness of your food is a great source of pride for us.

The Environment

NY Farmers Love The Land

We practice sustainable farming for a cleaner, greener NY

Farms contribute to the economy, food security and environmental protection. We have an ethical obligation and a vested interest to farm sustainably. We live on the land we work, we drink water from our wells and we swim in nearby lakes and streams. We follow environmental and public health regulations, and farmers assisted NYS DEC in developing environmental regulations for dairy and livestock farms. We reduce our carbon footprint by reducing, reusing and recycling. We make significant investments each year to recycle nutrients appropriately on cropland. We are committed to protecting land and water quality for generations to come. Read more >

Economic Impact

NY Farmers Love Strong Communities

We create jobs and drive growth in our communities

Dairies are economic engines. Studies show that every dollar we spend generates another $2.50 in local economic activity. A dairy with 1,000 cows has an economic impact of $13.7 million on its community each year. We’re more than part of the landscape; we’re part of the social and economic fabric. Milk doesn’t stay on the farm; where milk goes more jobs are created. Dairies like ours hire workers, purchase machinery, trucks, fuel and more from local companies, which generates jobs and income. Dairies create jobs for crop growers, veterinarians, insurance agents, accountants, bankers and others. We work to preserve our dairy and to ensure that our community prospers and our way of life continues for generations to come.
